About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

Bear Attacks Teen Girl During 24-Hour Bike Race

During the 13th hour of a 24-hour mountain bike race in Alaska, a 14-year-old girl was attacked by a bear. The girl suffered head, neck, torso and leg wounds. Rescuers said the bear tried to bite the girl’s head, but her bike helmet saved her life.

The attacked happened during a bike race hosted by the Arctic Bicycle Club in Bicentennial Park on Anchorage’s east side near Chugach State Park.

Rescuers had to hike two miles to reach the girl. They were escorted to the scene by police armed with shotguns.

Biologists believe the bear was a sow grizzly. The same bear is suspected in charging two hikers in the same area two weeks before.

The girl underwent surgery and is in serious condition.
