About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Mother and Son Rescued Using GPS Phone

A woman and her 8-year-old son in New Jersey’s Sourland Mountain Preserve wandered off trail and were unable to find the marked trail on Tuesday.

The mother and son became lost and were unable to locate the trailhead. The woman called 911 on her GPS-enabled cell phone. The dispatcher used the GPS coordinates and plotted her location on Google Earth. She then sent a police officer within 1,000 feet from the mother’s position.

The officer honked his horn, which helped guide the woman and her son back to the road. Both the woman and son were found in good condition.
