Nine young adults, ages 17 to 21, were rescued after hiking near the Cattaraugus Creek area in Zoar Valley, New York. The group, all from Buffalo, were hiking in the area during a rain storm which made the creek rise. The hikers were unable to cross the creek safely, the only way back to their cars, and were forced to call for help. Fog and darkness delayed the rescue until the next morning.
All of the hikers were forced to spend the cold night on a ledge 20 feet above the swollen creek and 150 feet below the lip of the gorge. The hikers were only wearing shorts and T-shirts while overnight lows were in the upper 50s (isn’t that hot for New Yorkers?).
It took two hours for a helicopter rescue crew to pluck the young adults from the ledge. Eight were treated and released. One was so badass that he or she (let’s not assume the badass person was a guy) declined treatment (or maybe he didn’t have insurance).
