About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Not to my surprise, the 9 teenagers and 2 guides lost in the Sierras were found. It actually seems like they were never lost. The group hiked to a store at Florence Lake and made a phone call to the Outward Bound headquarters.

Everyone in the group is reported to be OK.

Don’t think I’m disappointed [...]

Watch your footing. A couple of Canyonlands visitors fell to their deaths in the Utah national park.

One Hiker, One Climber Injured in Black Canyon

A hiker and climber were injured and rescued over the weekend during separate day trips through Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park.

A 62-year-old woman fell 30 feet while hiking the Gunnison Route – supposedly the “easiest” route on the South Rim of the canyon. This “easy” route is filled with rocky, strenuous and some steep [...]
