About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Crack Doesn’t Kill Teenage Girl in El Paso, Texas

A 17-year-old girl fell into a 15-foot deep crack while hiking with her family in Hueco (pronounced “way-co”) Tanks State Historical Site in Texas.

The park is a popular climbing destination, but the girl was simply hiking with her family when she slipped and fell backward into the crevice. A tree broke her fall, but she still received abrasions on her elbows and forearms and she complained of back pain.

She was alert and in good condition after the fall. The only problem was getting out. Search and rescue teams responded to the scene and used a series of ropes and a gurney to get the girl out. The rescue took about four hours.

The girl was flown out on a MedEvac chopper and flown to a local hospital. Her father told a local newspaper that “She said it was fun.”

I guess it would be fun for a teenage girl – getting all that attention and being rescued by fit hunky rescue men.

She said to be in good condition. Read the story here.
