About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Girl Missing in Washington Mountains Found, Keeps Warm with American Flag

God bless America. And God bless the American flag. Without it, Trisha Patterson’s night would have been a lot colder.

The 12-year-old girl was hiking with her family in the Lewis Peak area in Walla Walla County, Washington. She began hiking ahead of her family and became separated from the group when she took the wrong trail.

She ended up on a road and knew she was lost. While her family alerted search and rescue, the girl continued on the road looking for help. She found a cabin, but nobody was home. So she used an American flag hanging outside and used it as a blanket.

She also put a couple of benches together to make a comfy bed. At night, she heard ATVs running through the forest. She didn’t know if they were real or just her imagination so she just continued to sleep.

By first light, she continued down the road and saw a bearded man in a truck. The man, thankfully, was with search and rescue. She was reunited with her family at a fire station.

Her dad was proud of the girl for keeping her wits during the ordeal. She’s definitely smart for making a bed and using a flag to stay warm. But I don’t know about “imagining” people on ATVs. Maybe next time she’ll use a whistle to signal for help.
