A 30-year-old man broke both of his legs and suffered life-threatening injuries after falling off of a rock in Linville Gorge (pictured above), North Carolina.
Jakob Holly, of Asheville was hiking alone. He was unable to walk so he attempted to crawl back to his campsite. The man even put sandals on his knees to cushion them against the rock and dirt.
After 20 hours of crawling, another hiker came across Holly. He then contacted officials who decided that a chopper rescue was needed. A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter was dispatched from the North Carolina National Guard. The rescue and transport to a local hospital was completed in less than two hours.
The same rescue, if it were done by land, would have taken about 100 people 8-10 hours. Holly is now in a local hospital receiving treatment.

According to the comments and other webpages the trail the man was doing was closed. FREDTERP
Linville Gorge is packed with “closed” trails. There are a couple of old official trails that have been signed as closed for reforestation reasons. But it’s also packed with manways and tons of unofficial trails, too. It’s probably the most rugged place I’ve ever hiked (as someone who has hiked only on the east coast of the USA). But it’s at least as rugged as any placed I’ve hiked in Maine or New Hampshire.
