Two hikers became stranded on Camelback Mountain, Phoenix’s tallest mountain towering over the desert at a whopping 2,704 feet.
They were way off trail and stranded on a steep section. They called authorities and rescue was dispatched. One of the hikers climbed up a rock face so helicopters can spot him. The other hiker sat in a shaded area and found relief from the blazing sun. (I guess he won rock, paper, scissors this time).
The men were far off trail and stuck in a canyon area of the mountain, making for a difficult rescue operation. Crews had to repel into the canyon then chop down trees and bushes to clear a landing area for the helicopter.
Rescuers were working well into the night to complete the rescue.

Yesterday I posted an “Ask a Search and Rescue Member” question about getting found. The SAR member suggested climbing higher to be seen by crews. I guess it works.

Great site. Found link to it from Mt. San Jancinto Message Board. I try to hike a lot and have been to many of these palces. How does anyone get lost on Camelback Mountain?!
