About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Rescue Team Responds to 1 Missing Hiker, 1 Injured Climber, 1 Hiker with Heartattack, 2 Dehydrated Hikers and 4 Alpinists Struck by Lightning in 1 Day

A rescue team in Chamonix Valley, France (pictured above) was flooded with calls in a single day. In total, the team responded to six different calls involving 9 hikers and climbers.

Here is a breakdown of the day’s events:

- A German became lost under the summit of Mont Blanc (pictured above). He was hiking with a group but they became separated. He managed to find his own way down while rescuers were responding.

- A climber falls down Aiguille du Midi (pictured above). He injured his back. The outcome is unknown.

- A 60-year-old man suffered a heartattack on the Blatieres alpages. The man was hiking with his wife and friends. Despite efforts to revive him, the man died. He had just retired a few weeks before his death.

- In separate incidents, a 63-year-old near Charamillion bubble lift (pictured above) in Le Tour fell ill, most likely because of dehydration. A 16-year-old on the via verrata routes in Passy also became ill, possibly because of dehydration or exhaustion.

- A lightning storm strikes four mountaineers coming down the summit of Mont Blanc. One was injured seriously and was airlifted off the mountain. The others were able to hike down on their own. The photo above is of an actual lightning sign on Mont Blanc.
