A search and rescue mission is underway after a family of three fell 200 feet from Sharp Edge (pictured below), a treacherous scramble up Blencathra in the Lake District of UK.
The mother, father and six-year-old daughter were traversing the rocky ridge known for its slippery rocks and moss-covered ledges. Somehow all three fell from the cliff. Two other hikers witnessed the fall and they were left clinging to the mountain in complete terror.
Two Royal Air Force Sea King chopper were dispatched to the scene. A rescue operation is underway to rescue the family of three and the two hikers scared by the site. A father and son (believed to be the witnesses) were plucked off the mountain. Also, the father and daughter were rescued. The mother’s rescue is underway.
Their condition has not been released.
Sharp Edge was pelted with rain in the previous weeks. The mountain is also known for its constant cloud cover which is ideal for moss to grow on the rocks.
A glacier carved an arête into Sharp Edge which formed a break on the trail. It is believed that the family fell on that difficult section.
Updates as they come. Read the story here.
