A lost 17-year-old tramper (Kiwi for “hiker”) was found thanks to night vision goggles aboard a rescue chopper.
The teen was solo hiking in Wainuiomata, New Zealand when she became lost. She was stuck on the mountain – cold, tired and out of water. She used her cell phone for help. But she didn’t know her exact location.
Rescuers used her cell phone to get a general location. Then a chopper equipped with night vision technology located her by finding a light emitted from her phone. The chopper landed about 100 meters from the hiker who was able to hike back to the location.
She was treated by a waiting ambulance near the trailhead.
Authorities said the cell phone was a critical piece of equipment in the rescue.
