About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Mountain Biker Goes over Handlebars in Oregon

A 38-year-old mountain biker from Bend may have suffered a broken collar bone after he went over the handlebars on the Flag Line Trail in the Dutchman Flat area.

Edward Wakefield was mountain biking with a friend when he somehow went head over heels. He was wearing a helmet and his friend was able to call 911.

The pair were about 5 ½ miles deep into the trail, but rescuers from Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue didn’t know of their exact location. So three rescue teams on ATVs were sent in from different trailheads in a game of who can find the victim first.

The mountain bikers were located a short time after and the injured man was transported out on an ambu-sled, essentially a trailer on wheels.

He was taken to a local clinic for treatment. He was patched up and released.
