Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Teen Dies at Base of Mount Whitney

A 16-year-old boy died after he slipped and fell while hiking on the main trail near Whitney Portal.

He was hiking by a waterfall about 400 yards from the parking lot when he fell. I’m not sure if this is the waterfall in Whitney Portal or if he slipped on one of the waterfall/stream crossings on the main trail.

He was given CPR at the scene and pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The boy was visiting the area with a youth group from Southern California. His name and his hometown have not yet been released, pending notification of his family.

Updates if they come in. Read the brief story here.
