Two Climbers died in an avalanche while climbing Mount Athabasca, an 11,453-foot mountain in the Canadian Rockies.
A climbing party that had already descended the mountain alerted Mounties that they had seen two climbers in the area of the avalanche. When the Mounties confirmed the climbers’ car was still in the parking lot and they had not checked into a hotel at night, they searched for the pair in the morning.
Rescue teams found a rope near the mouth of a crevasse filled with avalanche debris. The climbers’ bodies were found a short time after.
There bodies are being taken to the hospital for identification. Names and ages have not been released pending family notification.
