Two hikers from Massachussets stranded on an 18-inch ledge in the North Cascades were rescued after the pair managed to make their way to a glacier and a rescue chopper was able to find flat ground to land on.
The two were hiking the Ptarmigan Traverse and somehow became stuck on the ledge. They also managed to lose some of their gear. The pair had one sleeping bag and only part of a tent.
Initial rescues were delayed due to bad weather and the pair’s remote location, but the skies cleared and both air and ground crews were able to reach the hikers.
The hikers managed to stay alive during the two-day ordeal by finding their way off of the ledge and onto a glacier where they dug a trench to stay out of the wind.
They were rescued in good condition – not even requiring hospitalization.
