This would explain the warning on my new tent that says "DO NOT PLACE TENT UNDERNEATH A TREE". I thought this was a strange warning, since many camping trips are in the forest, and finding a place without a tree is difficult. Plus, trees provide nice shade.

A few years ago, King County WA SAR was called to rescue a young Boy Scout who was with a group at Annette Lake near Snoqualmie Pass. During the night, a large fir tree blew over and fell on top of the boy's tent. The boy sustained a pelvis fracture from this accident.
