About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Tumbles over Glen Burney Falls Trying to Save Dog

Thanks to Jeff of HikingtheSmokys.com for hipping me to this story.

A 23-year-old hiker suffered a fractured ankle, two broken toes on his left foot, a broken thumb and lacerations on his forehead after tumbling down a waterfall trying to save his dog from the same fate.

Taylor “Boomer” Sassman and his dog were out on a hike at Glen Burney Falls in North Carolina. His 12-year-old dog, Cosmo, was being swept down the falls and his loyal owner attempted to save them. Both the dog and the hiker ended up going over the falls.

Even though Sassman suffered multiple injuries, a full body scan of Cosmo the dog revealed only minor injuries in the fall. Sassman is grateful to the rescuers who responded so quickly to the scene. He believes he might’ve bled to death if he was left out there for any longer.

At the hospital, Sassman underwent three surgeries to repair his ankle. He hopes to recover in time to teach snowboard lessons at Ski Beech.
