About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Lost Hiker Rescued from Sheep Mountain, Alaska

A 31-year-old man became lost in snow, rain and fog while ascending Sheep Mountain in Alaska. Alex Hildebrand was on a solo hike when he became disoriented when the weather rolled in and the sun began to set.

He called a friend to tell him about his situation and Alaska State Troopers were alerted. Juneau Mountain Rescue responded to the scene and headed up the mountain at 2 a.m. The mission was ceased shortly after because snow, fog and darkness made a search impossible.

On the next day, Hildebrand used his cell phone again to tell authorities he was OK, but had no clue where he was because of the dense fog. A chopper and rescue was sent on the mountain again and located him 1 ½ hours later.

Hildebrand was in good shape, cold and wet. It apparently rained and snowed the night before. Authorities said he wasn’t dressed for extreme cold weather but attributed his survival to good outdoor clothing that prevented him from becoming hypothermic.

I wonder what kind of gear he was wearing … ‘cause I want it.
