About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Loses Glasses and Trail near Mountain Lake, Virginia

A hiker who set out for a casual walk through the Mountain Lake wilderness lost his glasses when he hit a branch on the trail. He was unable to locate his glasses and, when darkness fell, unable to find his way out of the wilderness.

Marvin Grant eventually used his cell phone to call the hotel and authorities were dispatched. Grant was able to see flashing lights and hear sirens. He followed the lights and sirens to safety.

I can relate to this story. I’m pretty much blind without my glasses. That’s why I always bring two pair – in case I lose a pair or if a hawk swoops down and plucks a pair off of my face.
