Shortly after midnight, police and mountain rescue were activated to search for an overdue 42-year-old-hiker who called his wife at first light to let her know he was not injured and had to spend the night on the mountain after becoming lost.
The man started hiking at 4:00 pm from Hallthurm in the direction of the Stöhrhaus on Untersberg (pictured above). When he failed to return at 9:00 pm, his wife called the police at 11:30 pm. A team of 10 mountain rescuers and two search dogs, along with an Alpine Police search dog and handler, were sent to search the trail from Hallthurm to Untersberg. There were concerns over the man’s safety because of the temperature at the freezing level.
After seven hours of searching through the night with 20 more additional rescuers and four more search dogs, the missing hiker called his wife on his cell phone and let her know that he got lost in the fog and darkness and had to spend the night on the mountain. He then hiked out on his own to Großgmain.
The 30 or so Bavarian mountain rescue volunteers from Berchtesgaden, Marktschellenberg, and the Austrian Bergrettung along with the police and seach dogs were no longer needed.
I wonder why to hiker waited ‘til morning to call his wife?
