About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Rain and Floods Strand Hikers in Lake District, UK

A group of walkers (not quite hikers, but casual outdoors people) required rescue when they were caught unprepared in rain, floods and darkness.

The group was walking in the Langdale area of the Lake District in the UK when a fierce rain storm came in. They had already crossed streams and rivers, but were unable to return because the waterways were flooding and unsafe to cross.

When the group didn’t return from their walk, emergency crews were alerted and began searching. The group was eventually found at 3 a.m. Authorities said they were unprepared for the conditions.

Even after the group was found, crews had problems returning them to safety as more roads and rivers were flooded and blocked the path out.
