About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

Austrian Mountain Rescue Search for Missing Climber in Romania

Thanks to Bergschlawiner of Seattle Mountain Rescue for submitting this story.

A 23-year-old Tyrolean woman climber from Austria has been missing in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania since last Saturday. All efforts by the Romanians to find her have been without success and international help has been asked from the Austrian Bergrettung. There are signs that the young lady is still alive, according to Peter Veider of the Bergrettung Tirol. The woman is wearing Recco reflectors sewn in the woman’s clothing. Recco is a reflector sewn into clothes and equipment. The reflector is used with a special radar used by mountain rescue groups, including groups in Austria and around the world.

The weather report on Tuesday for the region near the city of Busteni in Central Romania was for snowstorms with temperatures 12 degrees below zero Celsius or 10 degrees Fahrenheit which placed the missing woman’s life in danger.

The call from the Romanian Mountain Rescue came Monday night to Franz Lindenberg, the head of the Bergrettung in Lower Austria who has been working closely for years with the Romanian Mountain Rescue. On November 25, an Austrian Bergrettung team led by Veider and equipped with specialized equipment not available in Romania flew to Bucharest by Austrian Airlines and then was flown by a Romanian Army helicopter to the search area in the 2,500 meter high Bucegi mountains (pictured above).
