About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Avalanche Victim on Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun Rescued

Thanks to Bergschlawiner of Seattle Mountain Rescue for submitting this story.

A 24-year-old was buried by an avalanche while skiing out of bounds on Kitzsteinhorn. He was quickly rescued and had to be resuscitated by the medics from the “Heli 6″ rescue helicopter before being flown to the hospital where he was placed in intensive care.

The Bergrettung Kaprun mountain rescuers searched for several hours for other possible victims and an eye witness was uncertain if he saw one or two persons in the avalanche path before the avalanche happened. Authorities warn that there is a high avalanche danger in the Salzburg Alps following heavy snow fall.
