About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Dies in 50-Foot Plunge in Los Padres NF, California

A 79-year-old man from Glendale died after falling 50 feet to the base of a waterfall in Los Padres National Forest in Central California.

Hugh Blanchard was hiking with friends when the man somehow fell 50 feet off a cliff. The cause of the fall is unknown. Rescuers were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Due to the steep terrain, a chopper wasn’t able to land nearby.

Rescuers were forced to carry the man to a more open area where a chopper was able to land and hoist him to safety. Blanchard was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.
