About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Lost Skier Survives Night in Oregon Cascades

A lost 57-year-old skier was able to survive a cold night when he got lost near the Willamette Pass Ski Resort in Oregon.

Eugene Perry was skiing with a family member and they got separated on the mountain. When Perry didn’t return to the ski resort, the family member reported him missing. Sheriff search and rescue along with resort employees searched the trails and the perimeter of the resort with no luck.

Perry became lost in the dark. He was able to find a three-sided shelter near a cross country trail where he hunkered down. Perry was prepared and was skiing with a backpack that had extra clothes and something to start a fire.

He made a fire, put on his extra clothes and was able to survive overnight temps in the 20s. When the sun rose the next morning, Perry walked along the highway and back to the ski resort. He was cold, but uninjured.
