About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Man Breaks Leg in Colorado Avalanche

A 42-year-old man broke his leg when he was caught in an avalanche while skiing in the Ptarmigan area of Wearyman Spur between Shrine Mountain (pictured above) and Red Cliff in Colorado

The man was skiing with a friend when the avalanche struck and broke the skier’s leg. The skier’s friend was able to pull him out and secure his leg before calling for help. Vail Mountain Rescue and the Summit County Search and Rescue team responded and transported the injured skier to a local hospital.

It is unclear if the man was able to swim to the top of the avalanche, if he was wearing a beacon or if the slide was minor and he floated on top.
