A solo 25-year-old hiker was found after he became lost off trail near Akaka Falls in Hawaii.
The man started his hike on the trail to the falls then wandered off trail for about 45 minutes. He was unable to find his way back to the main trail. At 8:24 p.m., the man called 911 for help.
Firefighters on foot responded to the scene, but the search effort was hampered by heavy rains, muddy condtions, swollen rivers and zero visibility.
But with the help of cell phone conversations, call outs and lights, the firefighters were able to locate the hiker. The man was uninjured when they found him.
The search stretched long into the night. Firefighters didn’t return to their quarters until 1 a.m.
