About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Search for Missing Japanese Mountaineers on Mt. Nukedo Halted

Two Japanese mountaineers are missing after an avalanche swallowed them on Mount Nukedo in Japan.

Yoshihito Kuwahara, 48, and Masayoshi Tsukada, 39, were climbing the mountain with two other climbers. But the two set out first from base camp to check the route to the summit. While the climbers were scouting the mountain, an avalanche rumbled down the mountain at around 1,500 meters.

The avalanche was about 60 meters wide and 3 to 4 meters deep. The climbers at base camp looked up and saw their friends running, but they were unable to get out of the avy’s path.

Search for the climbers was halted when it was unsafe for teams to be in the fresh flow. The search is planned to resume this morning.
