About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

10 Climbers Die in Turkish Avalanche

Who: 10 climbers part of a group of 17.
Where: Northeast Turkey in the Gumushane province
Their mistake: Just bad luck.
What happened: 17 climbers from the Trabzon region of the Black Sea were climbing Mt. Zigana when an avalanche swept and engulfed the entire group. 10 climbers died, 2 are still in the hospital and five were able to get out unscathed.

A massive search began right after the avalanche. The search involved volunteers, search and rescue teams and military personnel. It is unclear if there was a high avalanche danger in the area and what caused the slide.

Witnesses recall hearing two gunshots right before the avalanche struck, but authorities believe they heard the snow releasing. One local official did say that temperatures in the area are warmer than normal. It is not known if that contributed to the tragedy.
