About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Avalanche in Bansko Kills 1

Who: Victor Garbev, 28
Where: Todorka peak, Bulgaria
Their mistake: Went snowboarding out of bounds and he wasn’t wearing a beacon
What happened: A man was snowboarding out of bounds with a friend above the Bansko winter resort when an avalanche came tumbling down and engulfed him around 11 a.m. His friend was able to get out of the way.

It doesn’t seem like they were wearing beacons or had any avy equipment. The man’s friend was able to alert authorities who searched until 2 a.m. when they called it off because of bad weather.

The next morning, the body was found under 3 meters of snow. There were no other victims in the avalanche.
