Who: A 37-year-old hiker from Calgary
Where: Big Sister Mountain, Canada
His mistake: Decided to glissade down an unstable slope
What happened: Two hikers descending Big Sister mountain released an avalanche that engulfed one of them and left the other swimming for his life.
The hiker higher up on the mountain was able to dig himself out. The other hiker wasn’t so lucky. The friend who dug himself out immediately started looking for the buried man, but gave up and went for help. Mounties along with other search and rescue groups responded but called off the search due to threats of new avalanches and the fading light.
Rescue resumed the next day and the man’s body was found. Avalanche danger in the area was not high, but this year’s pattern of weather has made Western Canada avalanche prone.
