About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Glissader Wearing Crampons Injured, Duh

Who: A 23-year-old man from Arcata
Where: Mt. Shasta, California
His mistake: He was glissading a steep slope wearing crampons
What happened: A man decided to glissade down a steep slope above Helen Lake wearing crampons. He became the poster child for wearing crampons when glissading when his crampon caught some ice, his leg snapped and was sent tumbling 500 feet down the slope.

Two local snowboarders saw the accident and helped the injured man down to Helen Lake. Three skiers then took over and lowered him further down the mountain until rangers met with them and took over the rescue.

I’ll admit that I glissaded down the same hill wearing crampons for part of the slide. But I kept my feet way above my head like I was getting my diapers changed.

Read the story here.
