Who: A 32-year-old hiker from London
Where: Langdon Beck, UK
His mistake: Got lost on the trail
What happened: A man went for a hike and lost the trail in a blizzard that brought heavy snow that was drifting more than 5 feet high.
He found shelter in a grouse butt, an enclosure in the hills for grouse shooters. Some grouse butts have roofs. It is unclear what kind of protection the man received.
Family members didn’t report the man missing until two days later when they haven’t heard from him. Immediately, 55 rescue members braved the blizzard conditions to find him.
They found the man 2,200 feet up the mountain and two miles from his intended route. He was properly equipped for the conditions and was in pretty good condition when he was found.
Authorities say it is pretty easy to get lost in the area he was hiking due to the featureless terrain with no landmarks to help guide people back to the trailhead.
