About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Man, 4 Children Stuck on Cliff Rescued

Who: A 63-year-old man and four kids, ages 7 to 16
Where: Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
Their mistake: They just got stuck. They should’ve chosen an easier hike
What happened: A man and four kids were hiking in the Lost Canyon area of Red Rock Canyon when they found themselves stranded atop a cliff. They were unable to get themselves to the canyon floor and had a limited supply of food and water.

Someone reported the group overdue at 5 p.m. Park service and local police responded and located the group. A chopper was dispatched and the hikers were plucked off the cliff one by one. Details are kind of thin, but I’d like to know a little more about how they got stuck.

Read the story here.

This kind of thing happens all the time out at red rock!

It’s a good idea for people to Make sure you tell someone where you are hiking and what time to expect you back

Red Rock is not a place where you want to be stuck for a long period of time without water!

I happen to know the people that got “stuck”. Once he realized that they had hiked too far in and wouldn’t make it out before dark, he called someone about 4pm to notify search and rescue. They were able to contact him via cell phone to get his location. They didn’t really get “stuck” on a ledge. He knew there was no way they could be pulled out of the valley, so he got them to a place where he knew a helicopter could land and that’s why they were on a ledge. Search and rescue responders told him and obviously he made some stupid decisions leading up to getting too far in, but that everything he did after the phone call was right.
