Once he realized that they had hiked too far in and wouldn't make it out before dark, he called someone about 4pm to notify search and rescue. They were able to contact him via cell phone to get his location. They didn't really get "stuck" on a ledge. He knew there was no way they could be pulled out of the valley, so he got them to a place where he knew a helicopter could land and that's why they were on a ledge. Search and rescue responders told him and obviously he made some stupid decisions leading up to getting too far in, but that everything he did after the phone call was right.
