About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Mt. Cook Climber Found Dead

Who: An Israeli hiker in his 20s
Where: Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand
His mistake: He went off track and somehow slipped to his death
What happened: A man descending on the Mueller trail on Mt. Cook was found dead after he was overdue from his hike. He was last seen at the Mueller Hut and was supposed to be out of the park on Monday.

The next day, aerial rescue crews found the body, but high winds delayed a recovery mission.

Today, the body was recovered. Authorities believe he made a conscious decision to leave the main trail and came to a difficult part where he slipped and eventually died. It is unknown how far he fell.

The Mueller trail is one of the most popular on the mountain. Approximately 4,000-4,500 climbers use the trail annually.
