About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Skiers Found in Grand Teton National Park

Who: Chris Buechley, 29, and Dan Myers, 27
Where: Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Their mistake: Took a wrong turn down the mountain and got lost without adequate food or clothing
What happened: A couple of backcountry skiers intended to ski down the Rock Springs bowl but inadvertently turned the wrong way and got lost in Granite Canyon.

They had no food, equipment or ample clothing for an overnight stay. Somehow they made it through the night. It is unclear if they hunkered down somewhere or if they dug a snow cave. The next morning, one of the skiers was able to get cell phone service and call authorities. Using the GPS locator in the cell phone, park rangers on snowmobiles were able to find them shortly after.
