Who: A 55-year old lady snowshoer from Vienna
Where: Raxalpe, Austria
Her mistake: Bad luck
What happened: The lady was on a snowshoe hike with an 11-person group from Vienna heading from the Rax cable car station to the Karl Ludwig-Haus mountain lodge (pictured above) when she had some kind of circulatory problem. She became weak and slipped and fell at an icy spot on the trail at the 1,700-meter level injuring her ankle.
The group was well-equipped for this snowshoe trip. They made an emergency call for help because it was getting dark and the injured lady was not able to make it out of the mountain lodge.
Twenty mountain rescue volunteers from the Bergrettung Reichenau together with an Alpine Policeman hiked up the mountain in the dark at 7:00 pm and found the group at 10:00 pm. The uninjured members of the group were given warm drinks and were able to continue hiking to the Karl Ludwig-Haus.
The injured lady was given first aid and transported to the lodge by a toboggan. On Sunday morning, she was picked up by a rescue helicopter and taken to the hospital in Neunkirchen.
