About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

We finally made it to 100,000 hits. In the seven months I’ve ran this blog, I am surprised that I’ve posted nearly 900 stories of hiker/climber/backpacker injuries and deaths. That’s about four stories a day.

When I started this blog, I never fathomed that so many people would find themselves in trouble while enjoying the outdoors. It just goes to show you the potential price we can pay to see nature’s beauty and the experience she gives us.

Great site. The sheer quantity of incidents is a revelation. Very often I’ll be on a trail and think that it presents certain risks and wonder about what could happen. Not hearing about accidents, one tends to shrug it off. However, information about things that are happening all over the place reminds one that the risks are real.

    Thanks for doing this.
