About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Avalanche on Half Dome Gobbles Tourist

Who: Seven South Korean climbers, all experienced
Where: Half Dome, Yosemite, California
His mistake: He was experienced with the right gear. Maybe just a bad choice to play on Half Dome while it’s covered in snow.
What happened: A group of seven climbers were ascending half dome when a slab broke off and caused an avalanche.

One of the climbers was swallowed by the snow but was able to swim out of it. He was injured in the accident, but he is alive. Officials said the group was well-equipped and experienced for the hike.

The injured man was placed in a litter and hoisted by a helicopter to safety.
