Who: 32-year-old Gabriel Fortin and 27-year-old Stephanie Desilets
Where: White Mountains, New Hampshire
Their mistake: Looks like they got caught in bad weather, but they were well prepared
What happened: A couple of Canadians attempting to traverse the presidential range from north to south were caught in nasty weather and were forced to hunker down.
Fortunately, the couple was well prepared for cold conditions. They had proper clothing to stay warm, ample equipment for cold winter weather and the smarts to find shelter in a ravine that provided cover from wind, fog and snow.
The only problem they had was they ran out of fuel and were unable to melt snow for water.
Luckily an Army National Guard helicopter that was part of a larger search found the couple around noon. The couple was safe, healthy and uninjured.
Authorities said the couple’s preparedness saved their lives. And they did a lot of things right to survive the ordeal.
