About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Who Drank Bad Water Rescued

Who: A 35-year-old female
Where: Kalalau, Hawaii
Her mistake: Should’ve filtered the water.
What happened: A woman became ill supposedly from stream water during a 10-day camping trip with her husband.

It is unclear how or if the woman filtered the water. Either way, she made a mistake by not filtering the water, or not filtering it correctly. When the woman fell ill, her husband called for help. Firefighters launched a rescue.

The husband escorted his wife to a landing zone where she was airlifted to a local hospital. He had to hike 11 miles to the trailhead. It is unclear what disease she picked up from the rain water.

Sorry, there aren’t too many details on this one.

More likely, someone didn’t wash their hands. Research points to that as a more common problem than untreated water.
