About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hypothermic Hiker Stranded in T-shirt and Shorts

Who: A male hiker (no other details)
Where: Skyline Trail beneat the Palm Springs Tram
His mistake: He was wearing a t-shirt and shorts in 30-40 mph winds at the 7,500-foot level.
What happened: A hiker wearing nothing but a t-shirt and shorts became hypothermic when he was caught in 30-40 mph winds at the 7,500-foot level trying to hike the Skyline Trail, a grueling steep hike.

The man used a cell phone to call for help and rescuers immediately responded. They located the man, put him in a sleeping bag and gave him warm liquids. The rescuers stayed the night with the hiker. He was escorted out by rescue team members the next day. Duh.

My nomination for the “Darwin Award”

Well, he survived, possibly to breed. That pretty much precludes him from a Darwin Award. I think only one guy who survived his stupid act got the award, and he later committed suicide. (Lawn Chair Larry)
