About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

Who: 47-year-old David Beakin
Where: Great White Icicle in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
His mistake: Not sure what happened, but he broke his ankle.
What happened: An ice climber somehow broke his ankle while ascending the Great White Icicle in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The man, who was climbing with a friend, had a cell phone on him and was able to call 911. Technical ice climbing rescuers responded to the scene and lowered the man to the ground. The Icicle is about two miles from the trailhead and rescuers had to hoof the man out on foot.

The Great White Icicle is a very popular and straightforward ice climb in Little Cottonwood. It regularly sees accidents due to icefall, often from other parties climbing careless, and its high number of attempts, many of them by climbers of modest experience.

But from the base of the climb to LC road is less than a quarter mile, and the climber trail is usually stomped clear. Very routine evac to the Snowbird/Alta approach highway.
