His mistake: He was inspired to head into the mountains but didn’t take the proper gear or food for a day hike.
What happened: a 19-year-old high school wrestler was in the Inland Empire of Southern California and was inspired by the mountains he saw from his hotel room.
The teen decided to stay in his hotel another night and head into the mountains the next day. He was unfamiliar with the area and didn’t have the proper gear or clothing.
Later that evening, the teen called for help saying he was lost. After the phone call was made, the man’s cell phone went dead. Roughly 50 search and rescue members set out to look for him.
Rescuers were unable to find him before nightfall and temperatures overnight dipped into freezing levels.
The next morning, a chopper spotted the teen and hoisted him to safety. He was suffering from exposure and possible hypothermia. He was also tired and very exhausted. It is unknown what he was wearing or how he managed to stay warm overnight. Maybe more details to come.
