Who: A 37-year-old man from Calgary
Where: Big Sister, part of the Three Sisters in Canada
His mistake: Went hiking in avy conditions. It doesn’t seem like he was wearing a beacon either.
What happened: A man and his hiking partner scrambled to the top of Big Sister and glissaded down. They triggered an avalanche that engulfed both hikers. One hiker floated to the top and rolled out. The other was sent down a cliff.
Rescuers responded and probed around a loose ski pole and other debris. The man wasn’t found. By nightfall, rescuers stopped searching due to darkness and the possibility that another avy would be set off. The next day, a search dog was brought in an located the missing hiker rather quickly.
The death brings the avalanche death toll this season to 14. Read the story here.

Is this not a repeat from an early entry in January?
