About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Mountain Dwarf Saved by Chihuahua

Who: Beverley Burkitt, a 45-year-old dwarf
Where: Snowdonia, UK
Her mistake: She wandered into the forest alone and dropped her cell phone
What happened: A hiking dwarf wandered into the forest alone with her pet Chihuahua. She became disoriented in the woods and became lost – unable to find her way back to the trailhead.

The dwarf also dropped her cell phone during the hike, so she had no way to contact help. Luckily the dwarf’s daughter was back at the trekking center. A massive search operation began.

The dwarf did do some things right. When she realized she was lost, she stayed put and hunkered down next to a tree. Her 7-inch-tall Chihuahua lay across her legs to keep her warm. The dwarf credited the dog for saving her life while temperatures dipped overnight.

The next morning, a search party found the dwarf while she was resting with her dog on her legs. She didn’t suffer any injuries and in was in good condition.
