About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Snowshoers and Dogs Spend Cold Night on Mountain

Who: Four snowshoers and three dogs
Where: Fuji Mountain, Oregon
Their mistake: They set out in winter conditions unfamiliar with the trail.
What happened: Four snowshoers set out for a hike that was supposed to be a quick two-hour jaunt to a mountain hut. But because of whiteout conditions and tons of snow, the mountain hut was buried in snow and the hiking group completely missed it.

One member in the group used a cell phone to call for help because one of the snowshoers was already showing signs of hypothermia. They dug into a tree well to protect them from the elements until help arrived.

The next morning, rescue teams on snowmobiles reached the party and were escorted out. They were quickly treated and released. No serious injuries were reported.
