Who: An experienced climber
Where: McIntyre Bluff, BC, Canada
His mistake: His drill failed and he got stuck
What happened: A climber, apparently climbing by himself, was setting routes for the upcoming season. 106 meters above ground, the man’s drill malfunctioned and he became stranded. He had no way to safely climb up or rappel down. Search and rescue was called and multiple agencies responded.
Rescuers set up anchors at the top of the cliff and attached the climber to ropes. The rescuers then hauled the man up. Nobody was injured during the rescue. The man was escorted down the cliff around midnight.
Authorities believe the man was an experienced climber, but also warned that only the most experienced should be setting new routes.
