About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

3 Young Brothers Rescued from Canyon

Who: Three brothers, ages 18, 14 and 10
Where: Rock Canyon, Utah
Their mistake: Went hiking and underestimated the slope and their timing.
What happened: Three brothers went hiking into a canyon and ended up in a spot that was too steep to continue up and not safe to climb down. On top of that, the sun began to set and it became dark. The 18-year-old brother slipped and cut his head, but the injury wasn’t serious.

The boys began to yell for help and their screams were heard by another hiker, who called 911. The call was put in at 7 p.m. and emergency crews arrived by 9:30 p.m. Search and rescue teams used ropes and haul systems to get the boys out. The entire rescue took about an hour.
